Changing Textpattern to Wordpress
February 16th, 2007 | Posted in cmsA while back, I made a choice to use Textpattern (v4.03) as a CMS to maintain BE7A. At the time, Textpattern had better controls in terms of outputing contents and customizing layout. After working with it for a year, I constantly find myself changing layouts that I can’t seem to bring myself complete. I thought to myself, how will I ever get BE7A done if I can’t be satisfied or stick with one layout? Textpattern has its own benefits in development aspect, but efficiency was severely lacking such as organization and maintaining files. It took more time to search where files were located and it doesn’t provide any tools to organize them. One way to look at is, the more files you have the list goes on without breaking into groups or folders.
Since then, I just lost the motivation to finish it. Perhaps there were resources that I wasn’t aware or I just plainly suck at naming the files. Regardless, No one should have to worry about any of that tedious process. Instead, increase the productivity that provides the necessary tools. That’s when Wordpress came to my attention.
One of their biggest features is the simplicity of changing “skin” also known as “theme”. Switching back and forth or create new skin without losing the integrity of BOTH contents and designs had me interested. After researching the capabilities, I was really impressed how it was organized. Each themes are categorized into its own folder, thus allowing me to control each set of templates and codes that made it easy to maintain. I didn’t have hard time figuring out how wordpress works compare to Textpattern. When downloading Wordpress (2.1), a couple of themes had already included for you to use or investigate how it works. If that didn’t help, then majority of solutions can be found pretty much anywhere through search engine.
After a few days with WordPress, I was able to get it fully functional and I now have it nearly completed. It’s quite rewarding to see its near completion. All I have to do now is focus on building the contents. After all, content is the king and it’s what drive readers coming back for more. So, sit back and mess with BE7A for all I care. Enjoy!
